Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

What does it mean to be a good neighbor? It can be as simple as a wave to a passing car on your street, sending a letter to a distant friend, or seeing someone in need and reaching out to help.

Mister Rogers once said “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” This is the legacy and heart that Fred Rogers left behind to a generation of children and adults.  What our nation needs in this cultural moment, is a reminder that these seemingly small acts of kindness can have a major impact.

That is why VOMO is excited to launch our national Be A Neighbor Campaign this Saturday, November 16th.  This nation-wide campaign was created to honor Mister Rogers’ legacy by tangibly living out the principles that he taught all of us through how he lived his life.  In neighborhoods across the nation, we have various serving opportunities for you to pour into the community where you live. Make plans to use this day with your family, friends, co-workers, church group, or neighbors to step up, reach out, and be a good neighbor.

Also, make sure to go see the film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood on Thanksgiving Day.  Based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod, the skeptical journalist learns about kindness, love, and forgiveness from America’s most beloved neighbor.  It is sure to be a film that will inspire your entire family.
