How EarthX is Celebrating Earth Day 2020

In honor of of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, we spoke to Karen Fleig, Director of Marketing of EarthX about how people can take positive action for our planet.

Tell us a little about EarthX and how you utilize collaboration to drive awareness of environmental issues.

EarthX promotes awareness and explores sustainable solutions to today’s most pressing environmental challenges through inspiring conversation, creative storytelling and interactive experiences.

This year, we have partnered with the National Geographic Society for Earthx2020, April 22 – 26, 2020 to mark the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. This joint collaboration further increases knowledge through the EarthX experience and inspires people to take positive action for our planet.

What has changed for EarthX since the COVID-19 pandemic hit?

We have taken our conferences, film festival and youth programming online. We will first mark the 50th Earth Day Celebration on April 22 with a special address by Tia Nelson, daughter of Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day. Michael Ulica, President of the National Geographic Society will also take the virtual stage along with some of National Geographic’s most renowned explorers including Enric Sala and Sylvia Earle.

There will also be a series of conferences, a film festival and interactive events for youth that are both entertaining and educational. You can find the full schedule of events here on our website.

How can people continue to be environmentally responsible, even while sheltering in place?

Achieving a more sustainable world begins with each of us making a conscious commitment to take actions daily that help bring about lasting change. The more who commit, the better our world will be. As more commit, more organizations, businesses, and governments will be inspired to follow suit.

With our 50 for 50 Challenge, we encourage individuals to pledge in five categories: Earth, to sustain natural resources; Water, to protect water sources; Energy, to conserve energy; Cities, to improve city life; and Climate, to reduce climate change. Each involves 10 steps, and you can make all 50 in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. They can learn more and pledge online at: https://earthxleague.earthx.org/pledge.

Is there anything else you would like for us to know about EarthX, and how can we best support you?

The magic of EarthX has always been in how we can leverage conversations, art, music, stories, experiences and media to help audiences holistically connect with the world around us. Earthx2020 will still deliver this same multi-sensory experience despite our current physical restrictions, potentially bringing together an even broader audience to learn and be inspired toward climate action. We hope you’ll join us!
