Journey Church International is located in Lee’s Summit, MO – a suburb on the south side of Kansas City. They are celebrating their 8th anniversary on Sunday, September 15th. With an average weekend attendance of over 1,000, they are making waves in their city.
VOMO chatted with Cheri Hennig, Community Outreach Coordinator at Journey Church about how VOMO helped them pull of their biggest and most successful “Love Week” outreach event this year.
What is an aspect of serving that your church is passionate about?
One of our Core Beliefs is that we are called to be a church for our community, not just in our community. Lee’s Summit, and the Kansas City metro as a whole, have quite a few ministries and organizations that are already doing good work in alleviating poverty and ministering to the underserved. Rather than reinventing the wheel, we partner with these organizations to offer financial and volunteer support as they minister to our area.
In the past, what has been a challenge in organizing volunteers and how does VOMO solve that problem?
Every summer, we hold what we call “Love Week,” where we send as many volunteers as possible out into the community to serve over seven days. As we’ve grown as a congregation, Love Week has also grown. We went from around 300 volunteers our first year (2017) to about 1,000 this August. Having VOMO as a way to register that many people for projects, and as a way for our Team Leaders and Coordinators to be able to communicate with their Team Members was a huge help this year.
How is VOMO helping you recruit and manage your volunteers?O
It’s great having everything in one spot. People can view opportunities, register for projects and events, and check-in all with one profile and only having to visit one website (or app!). Our VOMO concierge, Joel, has been incredibly helpful in getting us analytical data and answering all of my questions. The customer service we’ve received has been above and beyond anything I expected.
What kind of impact are you excited to see by unleashing your volunteers?
I think we’re just getting started! Love Week 2019 saw:
- 975 volunteers serving 2,186 hours
- 63 projects
- 2,316 meals served
- 450 hygiene kits packed
- and 67 pints of blood donated
It was an absolutely incredible week!
One of our big traditions is delivering treats to our local first responders. As a former 911 dispatcher and a cop’s wife, I know how impactful that can be. I also know that there are several agencies in our area who get overlooked quite a bit when people think, “I really want to take some food to our cops and firefighters!” We received a personalized letter from a captain at the sheriffs’ office, thanking us for remembering them.
We also delivered backpacks full of school supplies for kids in our school district who needed them, plus a box of classroom supplies for every single teacher at the elementary schools closest to us. Because of the way our Community Outreach teams have served this school, they are starting to come to us first when they have needs and to see us as reliable support for their staff and students. I’m excited to see how we can continue to build that relationship!
I’m looking forward to riding the wave of excitement coming off of LOVE week and getting our people engaged with our ministry partners throughout the year on a consistent basis. Also, as our small groups are starting to meet again for the new semester, I’m glad to be able to refer them to VOMO when they ask for opportunities to serve in the community as a group. There’s something about putting feet to your faith that not only draws you closer to the people you’re serving with, but draws you closer to Jesus. It’s an honor to see people grow in their relationship with God by engaging in serving.
VOMO helps ministry leaders all across America easily recruit, manage, and reward volunteers for maximum impact. If your church would benefit from organizing and activating volunteers in an easier way, schedule a demo and one of our representatives can give you a tour of the platform and answer any questions you have.
